Labor Day 2022 Vacation - Day 9 - Dun Cove

We started our excursion to Dun Cove with a pumpout at Oxford, making sure all the right tanks were full and certain tanks empty.  Although it was still hot, we had to face the reality of no plan and Labor Day weekend.  We could always run the generator if we needed to.

The trip was a simple one... out the Tred Avon and down the Choptank until we reached Harris Creek.

One thing to note, we found a pylon that was cut off right at the water line just as you turned in from Harris Creek to Dun Cove.  Let's hope we can see this and stay away on the way out.

We arrived, selected a spot (there were only a few boats sharing the cove) and set the anchor.  After letting it settle for 5 or 10 min, I did the backup test and then we tightened the windlass.  After a little while, we felt we were set and let out the snubber.

The anchorage was beautiful.  A few high-end houses gave us something to look at (and I guess we returned the favor).  Dun Cove is protected on all sides (perhaps slightly open to the East) so the only rolling is from the occasional boat wake.

I'll let the photos and captions tell the rest of the story.

Yes, it was hot, but not unbearable.  I wanted to test the batteries (this is our fist time anchoring since the batteries were replaced), so we tried to avoid running the generator.  There was a nice breeze all afternoon and as evening approached, it cooled considerably.

We had dinner as the sun was setting and had our nightcap out among some wonderful night views.

Upon waking up, I checked the voltage and it was only 12.5 (starting at 12.7 yesterday when we switched off the engine).  What a difference good batteries make!

Following that, it was time for a sunrise photoshoot.

Our plan for today is that we will depart as soon as Vicky finishes sleeping (yes, she went back to bed) and head around Tilghman Island and across the bay to the Rhodes River.  (We had thought of going through Knapps Narrows and under the busiest drawbridge in the US, but the tides won't be right, so we are going around.)

Summary of Costs

Pumpout (incl. tip) - $10

Total for this section - $10
