History: Sailing along the Navesink River

So after passing ASA 101, we were qualified to rent a small keel-boat in good weather.  The school we used (The Tracey School, www.traceyschool.com) offered graduates the opportunity to rent and practice on a Seward 22' that they kept in the Raritan Bay.  So the weekend after our class, we got Captain George to help us for our first excursion up the Navesink.

For those familiar with the NJ area, the distance we're traveling is from Barnacle Bill's marina (near the Oceanic Bridge in Rumson), to the area right by the Molly Pitcher Inn in Red Bank, NJ.  Yes, that's a distance that takes maybe 15 minutes on a high traffic day.  It's about 1.5 hours by water on a small boat that you're just learning how to use.

It does go past some incredible houses... this yellow one belonging to J. Bon Jovi.

It was nice to have Captain George along for our first time out... still lots to learn.

The following weekend was our first time by ourselves, which was a bit scary.

Vicky was clearly using the trip to house hunt... too bad this one was owned by D. Jeter

We had a blast, but it was a relief when we finally made it back (and were able to dock the boat - not an easy task for beginners).

So... having done this ourselves.  The next logical step seemed to be to share our new found knowledge with some friends.  For our next trip, we invited Vicky's childhood friend, Maggie, and her cousin, Tiffany to join us.  (They actually came for a balloon ride at the festival, but it was "too windy" for the balloons.  We knew just the thing to do when it was too windy for balloons!)  Having them on board allowed for us to get a rare photo of the two of us.

The trip was a great hit, although getting back to the dock and tying off, still proved to be challenging.

In the end, it was smiles all around and we then headed to Bahr's Landing for some well earned food!

We sailed a couple more times and then signed up for ASA 103!
